The Fruit Seller
Observing a fruit seller’s routine led to small changes that transformed his business and earnings.
The Observation
Just outside my college gate, a fruit seller ran his stall every day. In my first year, I barely noticed him. But later, curiosity got the better of me. I started observing his customers, his 7–8 types of fruits, and his daily routine.
The Idea
After casually talking with a few regulars, I spotted a gap. Many said they’d pay more if fruits were cut, packed, and chilled. I suggested chopping and storing them in disposable boxes and for fridge use a thermocol box with ice. He was unsure. Chopped fruits spoil faster, and he was scared of losses.
Later, I encouraged him to buy a Sujata juicer to add juice to his stall. At first he hesitated, but eventually he set it up and invited me to help.
The Impact
Over time, his daily income grew from about ₹800–1500 to ₹2500–3000 a day. The day I visited before leaving college, he greeted me with the biggest smile and a glass of juice on the house. That moment reminded me how small design-minded interventions can change lives.
